The Emakhosini
- Valley of Kings lies 20km south of Ulundi. It was in this valley,
in about 1785, that King Shaka was born, and it is here that his
forebears - amakhosi Zulu (Nkosinkulu), Phunga, Mageba , Ndaba,
Jama and Senzangakhona are buried.
Senzangakhona was the father of three of the most famous kings
of the African subcontinent - King Shaka, King Dingane and King
Mpande. It was in this valley that Shaka defeated his arch rivals
the Ndwandwe and later established hist first royal residence
- KwaBulawayo.
His successor, King Dingane established his royal residence, Mgungundlovu
in the Emakhosini and it was here that the Voortrekker leader
Piet Retief was put to death.
The Royal residence of Mgungundlovu has been excavated and reconstructed
and a site museum provides interpretation.
Amafa AkwaZulu Natali have purchased nearly 20000 ha in this valley
and have consolidated it with the 8000 ha Ophathe Game Reserve.
The aim is to create a heritage park offering both a wildlife
and cultural experience.
